Reading Nonfiction Books

Our class pretty much reads nonfiction books every day.  We often start our day with nonfiction.  We just finished a read aloud book called Extreme Scientists.  The part our class read was about Hurricane Hunters.  We also have different baskets for different topics of nonfiction-from animals to weather to girls' clothing. A lot of people read different books. Some popular book topics are sports and animals.  The whole class has a variety of nonfiction books. We read National Geographic, Wonderopolis, DOGO News,  to Face to Face series and even Sports Illustrated.  Some of our favorite nonfiction authors are Seymour Simon, Nic Bishop, Steven Jenkins, Irene Kelly and Nicola Davies.

Which nonfiction books do you like best? PLEASE COMMENT!

  1. I'm so impressed that you are promoting NONFICTION for other students to read! I'm at a middle school library; what topics should I make sure I have in our library for kids to read?

    1. We think you should definitely have sports and animal nonfiction. You should also have some history books.

  3. Ahhhh...I recognize the names of some of my favorite authors. I know that my favorite fiction authors and their characters become my friends. Do you think that's true for nonfiction authors too?

    1. Some of us do and some of us don't. The Scientists in the Field series is like that. National Geographic kids is another. It depends on the person.

  4. Dear 4th graders,
We enjoy non fiction too! We love many of the same authors and series that you do, so I guess 4th graders are pretty similar no matter where they live! Are you as interested in the Titanic as we are? We are deep into a unit of study in science on weather, so we will have to check out the Hurricane Hunters section of Extreme Scientists. Hurricanes are such an interesting topic to study and we often feel the effects of them when they occur. We even had days off from school with Hurricanes Sandy and Irene due to power outages! Keep reading and keep blogging!

  5. A lot of my nonfiction reading is online - learning about other classrooms. But recently I've enjoyed a few great books.

Invincible Microbe - if you like to learn about diseases and how we've improved in treatment over the years, this book about Tuberculosis was great. So many people in history suffered from this disease, and knowing more about it has helped me understand a lot of history.

How They Croaked - This one is on the gross and creepy side (so only read it if you like that kind of thing!)

Amelia Lost - I loved learning more about Amelia Earhart!

Almost Astronauts - this is probably my most favorite recent nonfiction read. Did you know that there were 13 women who tried to become astronauts when the Mercury program began? I know I didn't!
